Quick Verdict
What it is: Chest-carry leather holster styled after the WWII-era M3 tanker rig
Tested For: Ranch work, UTV riding, bow hunting, and hog hunting in the Louisiana swamps
Time in Use: Since October — over 7 months of hands-on abuse
Bottom Line: A field holster that looks classic and works hard. Not for everyone, but perfect for the right job.
First Impressions
Right out of the box, the 1791 M3 Tanker Holster appears as if it could have accompanied the Greatest Generation into Europe. It features thick leather, robust stitching, and a rugged, straightforward design. Initially stiff (as expected), the quality craftsmanship is evident.
We acquired the 1791 M3 Tanker Holster, and it fits a Springfield Armory 1911 Government Model (5", stainless steel with Crimson Trace laser grips) perfectly, as if custom-made. Although it lacks a liner, the interior finish is smooth enough to prevent any scuffing of your firearm. After several months of use, there has been no finish wear or dye bleed — even on stainless steel and light-colored garments. This is a rare advantage for leather.

How We Tested It
We've been using the 1791 M3 Tanker Holster since October, and have put it through rigorous testing:
Worn daily during ranch activities like fencing, hauling feed, repairing gates, and waterlines
Experienced rough rides in a UTV over challenging terrain
Used while bow hunting, where waistband rigs are impractical
Most notably, extensively utilized in the deep woods and swamps of Louisiana for hog hunting
This isn't about light use — this holster faced mud, sweat, barbed wire, and dense brush that fights back.
Carried Firearm:
Springfield Armory 1911 Government Model
5" stainless steel, featuring Crimson Trace laser grips
Worn over shirts, jackets, and sometimes under a shell when necessary
In spite of everything, the 1791 M3 Tanker Holster remained firm, maintained its shape, and consistently proved reliable.

Performance in the Real World
Comfort: After a short break-in period, the 1791 M3 Tanker Holster proved to be one of the most comfortable setups we've used for long-term carry. The broad shoulder strap distributes weight evenly, and once properly adjusted, it remains secure — even when riding in a UTV or climbing a stand.
Draw and Access: This isn't designed for speed, nor does it claim to be. However, for ranch work or carrying in the woods, it provides quick enough access when necessary. The chest-mounted position ensures your firearm is accessible even when seated, belted in, or wearing winter layers — a significant advantage over waistband carry in the field.
Retention: The pistol fits snugly and stays secure. The thumb break is reliable and remains closed even when moving through brush or traversing uneven terrain.
Finish Protection: Despite being made of unlined leather, the interior is smooth and clean. After seven months of intensive use, our stainless 1911 still appears showroom-new. There are no scratches, discoloration, or dye bleed — even on hot, sweaty days in Louisiana and West Texas.

Pros and Cons
✅ Top-tier craftsmanship — thick, well-stitched leather built for abuse
✅ Comfortable for long days in the field once broken in
✅ Perfect access when seated or layered — UTVs, tree stands, or horseback
✅ No finish wear or dye bleed — even on stainless guns and light clothing
✅ Classic look that actually works in a modern context
❌ Break-in required — expect 1–2 weeks before it feels “right”
❌ Buckle may shift slightly if not tensioned properly
❌ Not ideal with chest rigs or backpack sternum straps
❌ Not designed for left-handed shooters
❌ Definitely not a fast-draw solution for defensive use — this is a field holster
Who It’s For (and Not For)
Who Should Be All Over This:
Ranchers, hunters, and landowners who carry during physical work
Outdoorsmen running revolvers or full-size autos that don’t carry well IWB
Anyone tired of waistband holsters getting in the way while riding, climbing, or working
People who appreciate rugged leather gear that’s made to last, not just look good
Who Should Skip It:
Concealed carriers looking for low-profile rigs
Speed-focused defensive shooters who need rapid access
Minimalist EDC folks who think anything bigger than a G43 is overkill
Anyone planning to wear it under a heavy pack or with a plate carrier — this rig isn’t meant for that
Final Verdict
The 1791 M3 Tanker Holster is meticulously crafted for its specific purpose and fully embraces that function without hesitation. It's not intended for those who want to flaunt their gear at the gun shop or on social media. It's designed for individuals who carry while mending fences, engaging in various outdoor activities, patrolling the property line, or working on land that requires constant upkeep.
After over seven months of practical use, we can confidently affirm this: if you need a dependable chest rig for carrying a substantial sidearm in tough conditions, the 1791 M3 Tanker Holster performs exceptionally well. However, it's not suitable for concealed carry — and perhaps best left at home for brunch outings.
